Background of the study
Digital media platforms have transformed language use, creating new contexts for communication that require innovative syntactic patterns. Social media influencers in Nigeria, who craft content to engage diverse online audiences, frequently employ modified sentence structures in Nigerian English. This study examines how digital media influences syntactic choices, such as sentence length, punctuation, and clause coordination, to achieve rapid communication and high engagement. Preliminary findings reveal that the informal, interactive nature of social media fosters abbreviated and creatively structured sentences that deviate from traditional norms (Afolabi, 2023). Influencers often blend colloquial expressions with innovative syntactic constructions to create memorable and persuasive content. By analyzing posts, tweets, and video captions, the study aims to document the syntactic innovations that have emerged as a result of digital media’s pervasive influence. It further explores how these patterns contribute to identity construction and audience engagement, positioning Nigerian English as a dynamic, evolving language in the digital age (Olu, 2024). The research employs corpus analysis and user interviews to provide a comprehensive account of these phenomena.
Statement of the problem
Although digital media is recognized as a catalyst for linguistic change, its specific impact on the syntax of Nigerian English among social media influencers remains underexplored. Early evidence indicates that non-standard syntactic patterns may both facilitate rapid communication and lead to misunderstandings (Eze, 2023). This study seeks to address the gap by analyzing these emerging syntactic forms and their implications for language evolution online.
Objectives of the study

  • To identify new syntactic patterns in Nigerian English on digital platforms.
  • To evaluate the impact of these patterns on communication effectiveness.
  • To assess how digital media shapes language identity among influencers.
    Research questions
  • What syntactic innovations are prevalent in digital media content?
  • How do these innovations affect clarity and audience engagement?
  • What role does digital media play in reshaping language norms?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the transformative role of digital media on language use. Its findings will benefit linguists, digital marketers, and educators by providing insights into the evolution of Nigerian English in the digital era and guiding best practices for online communication (Okeke, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to syntactic patterns in Nigerian English among social media influencers. It does not extend to offline communication or other linguistic aspects.
    Definitions of terms
  • Digital Media: Electronic platforms for communication, including social networks.
  • Syntactic Patterns: Recurring grammatical structures in language.
  • Social Media Influencers: Individuals who command significant online followings and shape digital content.
